Biographical Information[edit]
John Shaffer pitched in 1886 and 1887 for the New York Metropolitans. His ERA in 1886, which was 1.96, was strong.
Shaffer was born in Lock Haven, PA, in central Pennsylvania. Before he came to the majors in 1886, he went 24-11 for Atlanta.
It was reported in 1899 that he would captain and manage an independent team in Williamsport, PA for the Demorest Club. It was apparently a long-term relationship, because Sporting Life reported in 1895 that he had already been five years with Demorest. In 1895 he was slated to play pitcher and left field.
