Biographical Information[edit]
John Russ played one game in the majors. He was from Louisville, KY, and when the visiting team needed another player, he was it. On July 4, 1882, he pitched three innings for the Baltimore Orioles, giving up just one run. He also played in the outfield that game, and got one hit in three trips to the plate.
Russ was apparently a carpenter given a chance to play pro ball that day. He was also a plowmaker and woodworker, all in Louisville. Source: Cup of Coffee on Fourth of July
