Biographical Information

John Richmond was born in Philly and died in Philly, and twice played for major league teams in Philly. His major league career spanned eight seasons.

John also played for several minor league teams in the Northeast and in the South.

Richmond, at age 20, was a backup on a strong 1875 Philadelphia Athletics entry in the 1875 National Association which finished second, going 53-20. He didn't play again in the big leagues, however, until the 1879 National League, when he was a regular for the 1879 Syracuse Stars.

Richmond then served as a backup for two seasons, 1880-81 with Harry Wright's Boston Red Caps. After playing part of the 1882 season as a regular with the 1882 Cleveland Blues and hitting .171, he moved to the American Association for the rest of his major league career.

His hitting notably improved while with the Columbus Buckeyes in 1883-84. He achieved his highest batting average, .283, in 1883.

The book Baseball in Columbus has a couple photos of Richmond as part of Columbus teams. The book calls him the captain of the 1884 team.

He is not to be confused with Lee Richmond, who some sources call "John Lee Richmond".
