Biographical Information[edit]
John Rainey was a third baseman on the New York Giants in 1887, stuck behind Buck Ewing and Jim O'Rourke at the position. Rainey hit .293, but without much power.
He came back three years later in the Players League, this time playing mostly right field.
Rainey played for Hamilton during much of the period from 1885-1888.
"If John Rainey hadn't broken his leg while with Binghamton back in '92, Keeler might not have had the chance to break into the game so soon. . . I told (our manager) about Keeler, then playing with the Acmes, of New York. . ." - Gus Moran, quoted in Sporting Life of January 2, 1904
