Biographical Information[edit]
"The New Yorks won the first game in the eleventh inning on Doyle's two-bagger and Puhl's timely single with two men out." - Sporting Life from October 22, 1898, about John Puhl helping to win the team's last game of the season
John Puhl played a couple of games for the New York Giants in 1898 and one more for them in 1899. Although he appeared in that one game in 1899, it was reported before the season that a minor league team wanted his services, and Puhl thought manager John Day would give him his release so he could play there. By the summer of 1900, he was reported to be seriously ill, and he died in August at age 24.
