Biographical Information

John Peltz played major league baseball in 1884 and 1890, both times as a regular. He also appeared in one game in 1888. Unlike many players of the time who moved around the field, he played only outfield in his 230 games.

The book Rube Waddell by Alan Howard Levy mentions Peltz as a major league coach in 1900 for Cincinnati, riding Waddell hard from the third base coaching box and getting kicked out of the game as a result.

He was one of three ballplayers from New Orleans, LA who played with the Indianapolis Hoosiers in 1884, at a time when not many New Orleans players came to the majors. As a rookie in 1884, he makes the SABR Baseball List & Record Book for being one of the players who hit the most triples as a rookie. In general, he was aggressive on the basepaths with 26 lifetime triples as compared to 25 doubles.

Along with Charlie Ferguson and Jack Beach, Peltz is one three men born in the Confederate States of America to make his major league debut on May 1, 1884. They were the first Confederate-born players in the majors.
