Biographical Information[edit]
John Mihalic was 30 when World War II started. He had played in the major leagues in the 1930s but was playing for the Nashville Volunteers in 1940, 1941 and 1942. He went to work for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft in Nashville, TN during the off season in 1942 and remained with them for the 1943 and 1944 seasons playing part time for Nashville on Sundays and night home games. He was a cost accountant for the war plant and in 1945 promoted to supervisor of cost reduction and retired from baseball and was never in the service.
Living in Cleveland, OH in the 1930s, one of his neighbors was a young immigrant from Croatia named Joe Simenic. he gave him a copy of a Baseball Guide, sparking a life-long interest in baseball research in someone who would become one of baseball's great biographical researchers.
