Biographical Information[edit]
John Michaels wasn't as bad a pitcher as he seemed. He went 1-6 in his only major league season in 1932. However, his team, the Boston Red Sox, were a truly bad team with a record of 43-111. Michaels had an ERA of 5.13, but the team as a whole had an ERA of 5.02.
An interesting comparison can be made with Danny MacFayden, also a pitcher with the 1932 Red Sox. MacFayden had broken into the majors in 1926 and in 1932 had almost the same ERA as Michaels, and an even worse record. MacFayden went 1-10 with a 5.10 ERA. However, he was traded in mid-season to the New York Yankees and finished the season with a 7-5 record for the Yankees. Michaels didn't have such luck.
Michaels did give up 13 unearned runs. He is the grandfather of Jason Michaels.
