Biographical Information

John Maine was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 6th round of the 2002 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Marc Tramuta and made his pro debut that summer.

In early 2010, Maine got into a public dispute with the New York Mets coaching staff. After a string of poor performances, he was removed after only throwing five pitches in a start against the Washington Nationals on May 20. Pitching coach Dan Warthen explained that he had failed to top 85 mph on any of them, a clear sign that he was not physically fit to pitch. Maine insisted that nothing was wrong and that he should have been given more time to show his stuff. Warthen and manager Jerry Manuel said that concern had started during his warm-up session, and as a result reliever Raul Valdes had started warming up as soon as Maine took the mound. Warthen added: "John's a habitual liar in a lot of ways as far as his own health." Maine was placed on the disabled list the next day, with his record at 1-3, 6.13 in 9 starts after battling health problems all of 2009. He would only return to the major leagues in 2013, when he made four relief appearances with the Miami Marlins.
