John Leonard Jr. is the son of John Leonard and brother of Joe Leonard. John Jr. hit .556 as a high school senior and also had over 1,000 points as a basketball player in high school. The Arizona Diamondbacks took him in the 9th round of the 2011 amateur draft, one of two southwestern Pennsylvania high schoolers they selected in the top 10 rounds - Justin Bianco had gone in the third round. Leonard had a scholarship offer to North Carolina State University. He turned it down to sign with Arizona. He debuted as a pro with the AZL Diamondbacks on June 21, going 1 for 4 with two strikeouts and a run against the AZL Giants.
