Pitcher John Leonard was drafted 6 times by major league teams. He was picked by the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round of the 1979 amateur draft, by the Minnesota Twins in the 2nd round of the January 1980 amateur draft secondary phase, by the Baltimore Orioles in the 4th round of the 1980 amateur draft secondary phase, by the Oakland A's in the 1st round of the January 1981 amateur draft secondary phase, by the Chicago White Sox in the 2nd round of the 1981 amateur draft secondary phase, and by the Baltimore Orioles with the fifth pick of the 1982 amateur draft's secondary phase. He pitched 3 games for the Bluefield Orioles in 1982, going 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA. He walked 7 and struck out 8 in 7 2/3 IP.

Leonard's son Joe Leonard was Big East Conference Player of the Year in 2010 while another son, John Leonard Jr., was drafted in 2011.
