Biographical Information

John Kiley came twice to the majors. First, in 1884, he was an outfielder with the Washington Nationals. He hit .214, but the team played in a pitcher's park and hit only .200. His .321 slugging percentage was well above the team average.

He came back in 1891, at age 31, to pitch one game in the National League, which he lost. He gave up 6 earned runs and 3 unearned runs in 8 innings of work. The team, the Boston Beaneaters, went on to win the pennant.

The book Norwood: A History, indicates that a local Norwood, MA merchant formed a team in the mid-1870s, and that caused the popularity of baseball to rise. Kiley, from the area, went on to play for various minor league teams in the Northeast. Afterwards he returned to Norwood to work "in the car shops".
