Biographical Information[edit]
John Hauck was a successful brewer and banker based in Cincinnati, OH who was also the principal owner of the Cincinnati Red Stockings of the American Association for a time.
Hauck was born in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, before the unification of Germany. He emigrated to the United States around 1842 and settled in Cincinnati where he worked for his uncle George M. Herancourt, who owned a brewing company. Hauck formed his own brewery in 1863, the John Hauck Brewing Company, and when its success made him a wealthy man, formed the German National Bank of Cincinnati.
He became involved in baseball in 1885 when he took over the shares of his cousin, George L. Herancourt (George L.'s son), who had gone bankrupt. He was a hands-off owner and eventually sold his shares on February 27, 1886 to Aaron Stern, a clothing merchant who had previously been the team's owner and president.
