Biographical Information[edit]
John Gordon has been a longtime announcer. He was with the Spartanburg Phillies (1965-1969), Baltimore Orioles (1970-1973), Columbus Clippers (1977-1981), New York Yankees (1982-1986) and Minnesota Twins (1987- ). In 2001, he was inducted into the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame.
He originally attended Indiana University on a baseball scholarship, but quickly switched his focus to a broadcast journalism major and began working for WFIU, the university' radio station on football and basketball broadcasts. During a summer job at WSAM in [½[Saginaw, MI]], he adopted "John Gordon" as a professional name, although he kept his legal name of John Gutowsky. He then moved to a similar job for Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, MI. He got his start doing baseball broadcasts in Spartanburg when the team's General Manager, Pat Williams, a former minor league player who had been his broadcasting partner at WFIU, needed an announcer for his team. Williams would eventually become President of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic.
