Biographical Information[edit]

John "Joe" Fogarty, from St. Louis, MO played in the majors with the St. Louis Browns in 1885. He also managed the 1890 Fort Worth Panthers.

In November 1887 the Philadelphia Phillies were in California, playing Los Angeles, CA with both John Fogarty and Jim Fogarty in the lineup. However, the John Fogarty was likely Jack Fogarty, born John Patrick Fogarty, Jim's brother, who was a minor league player active in California at the time. That confusion led to many older sources mistakenly listing major leaguer Joe Fogarty as the brother of Jim Fogarty. For his part, Joe was described as a "local amateur" when he appeared with St. Louis (with no first name listed), but little was known about him for a very long time, making it easy for people to assume he was Jim's brother. Researchers have since managed to piece together more details about Joe's life, confirming that he was not related to his namesakes.
