Biographical Information[edit]
John "Patsy" Cahill is best remembered as the man who might have been the inspiration for Ernest Thayer's immortal poem "Casey at the Bat". According to some researchers, Thayer apparently saw a game in Stockton, CA in which Cahill appeared after his major league career was over, and various factors lead researchers to think that Thayer might have modeled Casey after Cahill.
In the majors, Cahill was not much of a hitter or much of a pitcher and was a below average fielder, but he managed to last long enough to play over 250 games over three years. He played outfield, infield, and pitched. Also see Cahill baseball card.
