Biographical Information[edit]

Switch-hitting right-handed pitcher John Burke was drafted a total of three times. In 1989, he was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 34th round (867th overall). In 1991, he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round, 6th overall. In 1992, he became the first amateur draft selection of the Colorado Rockies in the first round, 27th overall, and agreed to terms. Burke was primarily a starter in the minors, where, in 1993 with the Central Valley Rockies, he went 7-8 with a 3.20 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 119 innings. In 1995 with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, he went 7-1 with a 4.55 ERA. In 1994, Burke was the 49th best prospect in baseball, according to Baseball America. In the bigs, wearing number 37, he made 28 appearances (9 starts) over two seasons to the tune of a 4-6, 6.75 record in 74 2/3 innings. He currently lives in Littleton, Colorado.
