Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Willis had three years in the majors, pitching for the St. Louis Browns and the St. Louis Cardinals. In the minors, he had an eight-year career, of which four seasons were spent with the Indianapolis Indians.
Willis (called "Smiling Joe Willis") pitched successfully for a white club set up to play the championship "ABC" colored club in 1915. The two teams played a tie-game, while star Oscar Charleston of the ABC club went 3-for-5. Source: SABR article [1].
