Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Wall just couldn't convince the New York Giants to keep him, in spite of excellent hitting. In 1901, he hit .500 in 4 games, and then the following year, 1902, he hit .357 and slugged .500 in 6 games. He was released by the Giants on August 15th, and caught on with the Brooklyn Superbas, for whom he hit .167 in three games.
Wall was a left-handed catcher, although he also played some in the outfield.
He had been with the Toledo Mud Hens in 1901. He thereafter played many years in the minors, and also managed six years.
Wall was a fill-in umpire for one National League game in 1901. In those days, it was common for back-up catchers to be asked to fill in when an umpire failed to turn up for a game.
