Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Vernon pitched one game in the 1912 National League and one game in the 1914 Federal League.
Vernon was born in Massachusetts and went to Amherst College from 1909-12. He made his major league debut on July 20, 1912. The 1912 Cubs were no longer as good as the pennant-winning Cubs of 1906-08 and 1910, but they still won 91 games. Another player who pitched one game for the 1912 Cubs, Rudy Sommers, also later pitched for the 1914 Brooklyn Tip-Tops.
In 1912 Vernon also pitched for the Los Angeles Angels, posting one of the team's lowest ERA's.
Through 2008, Joe and Mickey Vernon are the only two major leaguers with the last name Vernon.
