Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Joe McCarthy was the first player to make his major league debut in 2020. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, it did not take place until July 23rd, when he started in right field for the San Francisco Giants against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second of two games played that day in the majors. He went 0 for 4 in an 8-1 loss.
McCarthy was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 5th round of the 2015 amateur draft, out of the University of Virginia. He was a Rays organizational All-Star in both 2016 and 2017 and in 2017, he was a post-season Southern League All-Star after hitting .284/.409/.434 for the Montgomery Biscuits. However, he lost big chunks of the next two seasons to injuries, and on July 31, 2019 was traded to the Giants for LhP Jacob Lopez. In 2020, he had already been assigned to minor league camp on July 19th, when a rash of injuries forced the Giants to call him back just before their first game, and insert him in the starting line-up. He ended up playing 4 games, going 0 for 10 with 5 strikeouts, before the return of the injured players sent him back to the Giants' alternative training site for the remainder of the season. He was released by the Giants following the end of the 2021 season.
On February 2, 2022, McCarthy signed with the Texas Rangers but requested to be released so he could play in the NPB. The Rangers released him on April 20th. He won the Japan Series with the Orix Buffaloes while he was in Japan. In December of 2022, he signed with the Rangers again and was invited to Spring Training, but was released on March 24, 2023.
His younger brother, Jake McCarthy, was a Competitive Balance Round A pick in the 2018 amateur draft and reached the majors in 2021.
