Father of John Flynn, Joe Flynn was an above-average player in the one year of the Union Association, where he played for two teams. A quarter of a century later, his son would play three years in the National League.
Joe played most of his games for the 1884 Philadelphia Keystones, a team that also briefly featured the 38-year-old Levi Meyerle, a star from the 1870s National League.
Retrosheet shows Joe Flynn, born December 29, 1861, as having been born in Providence, Rhode Island. Baseball-reference.com does not indicate where he was born, but has the same birth date.
