Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Farrell was the third baseman for the Detroit Wolverines from 1882-84, as they went from a .500 club to one far below .500. Farrell's batting average also dropped in that time.
He came back in 1886 to play one year in the American Association, playing second base and third base. In 1889 it was reported that he had left baseball and was working for the Nassau Gaslight Company of Brooklyn.
He is one of eleven major leaguers named Farrell (through July 2007).
Sporting Life of April 22, 1893 reported on his death "on Tuesday". It said he had been ill for a long time, and that a benefit had been scheduled for the following Tuesday. The paper had reported in 1887 that, having recovered from rheumatism, he had it again and also malaria. Even earlier, in 1885, it was reported that he had both a cold and a "lame leg".
