Biographical Information[edit]

Joe Dowie played 20 games in the majors in 1889, all as a right fielder. His minor league career ran through 1904.

Dowie was born and died in New Orleans, LA. He was one of the first dozen major leaguers born in Louisiana. He began playing pro ball in 1886, and was a popular player with teams based in New Orleans for all or part of nine separate seasons. He also played for other teams in the South, and even spent some time up North with Montreal, Hamilton and Minneapolis. He managed at Houston in 1903.

The September 9, 1893 issue of Sporting Life carried news that he had been "fatally wounded" during a dispute among a number of people outside a New Orleans bar. He was not at the center of the dispute but he was the one who ended up shot. However, by the time of the September 23 issue, he was already up and out in the city again.
