Joe Caraco umpired 7 games in the American League during the umpires' strike in 1995, the peak of a six-year professional career. He umpired for over 20 years in the Cape Cod League.

He was an umpire for six years in the minor leagues. He went to the Joe Brinkman Umpire School in 1987 and received the inaugural "New England Award", which was given to the best student from the New England area. After umpire school, he was sent to the MLB umpire camp after which he was placed to start his minor league career in the New York-Penn League in 1987. He was then promoted to the Florida State League in 1988 where he umpired through the 1990 season, during which he was the league "rover" (the "rover" turned any crew he joined to a three-man crew and stayed with them for a series or two before moving on to another crew). He was promoted to the Eastern League for the 1991 and 1992 seasons.

Joe began umpiring NCAA college baseball in 1993 at the Division 1, 2 and 3 levels. He umpired in seven consecutive Division 3 regional tournaments from 2000 to 2006 and also umpired several Division 1, 2 and 3 conference tournaments.

Joe began umpiring in the prestigious Cape Cod League in 1994 and has umpired several championship games. In 2012 , he was named Cape Cod League umpire of the year.
