Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder-outfielder Joe Burns played seven seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1945.

Out of baseball in 1941 and 1942, Joe returned in 1943, making his major league debut on April 24 with the Boston Braves. He received 135 at-bats and hit .207 in 52 games. Joe spent 28 games with the Philadelphia A's in 1944, hitting .240, and capped his career with the 1945 A's, appearing in 31 games and hitting .256. Burns was released on May 27, 1946, having hit .230 average in 111 games. He previously spent his first four seasons (1937-1940) as well as part of 1944 in the minors, appearing with five different clubs in five leagues. In '44, with the AA (then the highest tier of the minors) Indianapolis Indians, he hit .302 in 59 games playing second base. Joe's career minor league totals show he appeared in 386 games and hit .273 with 15 home runs. He died in his native Bryn Mawr, PA at 58 on June 24, 1974.
