Biographical Information[edit]
" . . . the acknowledged leading first sacker of the Southern League..." - Sporting Life, June 7, 1913
Joe Agler played major league baseball mostly in the Federal League. He was good at drawing walks, with an on-base percentage more than a hundred points higher than his batting average. In 1912, the Chicago Cubs picked up Agler from the Newark Eagles and sold him in June to the Atlanta Crackers. He did not appear with the Cubs but did make his major league debut in October with the Washington Senators. An April 17, 1914 article in the New York Times says that Agler jumped to the Federal League from the Jersey City Skeeters before playing a game with them in 1914. A variety of clubs planned to sue various players and FL teams as a result of players jumping. His big league career ended with the loop's folding following the 1915 season. He managed the Canton Terriers in 1928.
