Biographical Information

Pitcher Jodie Phipps made his pro debut in 1939 with the Worthington Cardinals in the Class D Western League. In 1942, he led the Canadian-American League in victories, when he went 20-10 with a 2.81 ERA for the Utica Braves. He joined the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League in 1943 and won his first 10 decisions with the club. By August, he was 16-1, but he trailed off slightly later in the year to finish 17-5 with a 3.03 ERA and a PCL-best .773 winning percentage.

Phipps developed arm trouble and his playing time was limited in 1944 and 1945. After World War II, he returned to the lower minors and played until 1957. Over a 19 year career, he went 275-172 with a 3.68 ERA.

Phipps later managed in the minors for seven seasons.
