Biographical Information[edit]
Joaquín Portobanco played in Nicaragua in the 1950s-1960s; his brother Heberto Portobanco was a noted Nicaraguan manager and nephew Luz Portobanco pitched in the minors.
Joaquín was with the Nicaraguan national team in the 1953 Amateur World Series; the teenager was 0-1, losing to Mexico. He was primarily an outfielder in the Liga Nicaragüense de Béisbol Profesional. He hit .208 in 1956, .287 in 1957, .257 in 1958, .113 in 1959, .240 in 1960, .184 in 1963, .272 in 1964 (going 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA), .195 in 1965 and .123 in 1967. He later coached for Granada in the 1970s, when his brother was the manager. One player he worked with was Dennis Martinez.
