Biographical Information

Pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 2003 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Braves, going 5-3 with a 2.56 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 11 appearances.

Reyes had a 25-game streak of starts without a win as of May 8, 2011. He was just the fourth major league pitcher to do so since 1912. The others were Anthony Young (27 games in 1992-1994), Bob Miller (27 games from 1960-1962) and Matt Keough (28 games in 1978-1979). On May 25th, he stretched the streak to 28 starts with a loss to the New York Yankees, matching Keough and Cliff Curtis, who went 28 games without a win in 1910-1911, for the longest streak in history. Reyes hadn't pitched all that badly during the rut: he was only 0-13, and in his previous start, he had left the game holding a 2-0 lead after 7 innings, only to see his bullpen cough up the lead. The streak started in 2008 when he was a member of the Braves, and continued after his trade to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010 and his winning a spot on the Jays' starting rotation in 2011. The streak finally came to an end on May 30th, when he threw his first career complete game in beating the Cleveland Indians, 11-1. He won a few more games after that, but, ironically, did not pitch as well as he had during the losing streak. After being shelled in a game against the Texas Rangers on July 23rd, he was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays, with his record standing at 5-8, 5.40 in 20 starts. However, he quickly landed on his feet, being signed by the Baltimore Orioles on August 2nd after being claimed on waivers and making his first appearance for his new team out of the bullpen the next day. He won his first game as an Oriole in his second start on August 14th, beating the Detroit Tigers, 8-5, as he only gave up one run in 6 innings.
