Biographical Information

Reliever Jimmy Cordero began his career in the Toronto Blue Jays system in 2012. He remained there until the trading deadline of 2015, when he was sent with Alberto Tirado to the Philadelphia Phillies for outfielder Ben Revere. He was an FSL Mid-Season All-Star in 2015. Though he reached Triple A for the first time in 2016 (one game), he was not long for the Phillies system, as he moved to the Washington Nationals organization for 2017. His combined numbers in 2016 were 2-3, 5.00 in 22 games for four different teams as he dealt with various injuries. He had a disappointing season with the AA Harrisburg Senators in 2016, finishing at 2-6, 6.84 in 41 games. His main issue was control, as he gave up 38 walks in 51 1/3 innings. In 2018, after seemingly righting things in the Arizona Fall League, he moved up to the AAA Syracuse Chiefs and was very good, with a record of 4-1, 1.67 and 6 saves in his first 38 games.

On August 2, 2018, Jimmy was promoted to the big leagues, taking the place of Shawn Kelley who had been released for throwing a tamper tantrum on the mound a couple of days earlier. He made his debut that day, pitching an inning of relief for the Nationals in a 10-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds, although he did not do that well, giving up a pair of runs on 2 hits and a walk. In 22 games, Jimmy finished with a 1-2, 5.68 line, walking 12 and striking out 12 in 19 innings. He did the DFA limbo in 2019, spending time in three organizations while crafting a combined 1-1, 2.89 record with 31 strikeouts in 31 games split between his old roost, Toronto (a loss, an earned run in 1 1/3 innings) and the Chicago White Sox (a win, 2.75 ERA in 36 innings). In 2020, things came crashing down as his ERA ballooned to 6.08 in 30 games. However, he still pitched twice in the postseason, and only allowed 1 hit (and no runs) in 3 2/3 innings as the White Sox lost to the Oakland Athletics in the Wild Card Series.

Cordero then missed all of 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, then signed with the New York Yankees before the 2022 season but spent the entire year in the minors, going 1-1, 2.09 in 32 games for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, also recording 6 saves. That helped him to find a job with the major league team in 2023. He was doing pretty well, with a 3.86 ERA in 31 games and a 3-2 record when his season ended abruptly for off-field reasons: on July 5th, he was suspended for the remainder of the season for violating baseball's domestic violence policy.
