Biographical Information[edit]

"He was a natural ball player, and made the easiest work of taking the most difficult drives. His one-handed catches, without gloves, never were equaled by a ball player in outfield work. . . Think of it, boys, with bare hands." - Tim Murnane, a former teammate of Jim Tipper, reminiscing about him after Tipper's death, in Sporting Life, May 4, 1895

Jim Tipper played three years in the National Association. Born in Middletown, CT, he played for the 1872 Middletown Mansfields, the 1874 Hartford Dark Blues, and the 1875 New Haven Elm Citys, all teams based in Connecticut. He later died in New Haven, CT.

All three of Tipper's teams finished well under .500. Tipper was one of the few players from the 1872 Mansfields that went on to play with other National Association teams.

Tipper had previously played for Mansfield when it was an amateur team in 1870.
