The city of Jim Thorpe on the Lehigh River in central Pennsylvania was formed by consolidating Mauch Chunk, PA and East Mauch Chunk, PA in 1954 and adopting the name of the great Native American athlete, Jim Thorpe. Denny Mack was born in Mauch Chunk and Hob Hiller was born in East Mauch Chunk before the merger. Barney McFadden and James McGeehan died in Mauch Chunk.
