Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Stump pitched quite well in his two brief stints in the major leagues.

Stump began his pro career as a 19-year-old with the Jamestown Falcons in 1951, going an impressive 14-3 with a 1.93 ERA in 26 appearances. He then missed the next two seasons while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was back in baseball in 1954, posting a 16-10 record and 2.69 ERA in 36 games with the Wilkes-Barre Barons.

After going 14-11 for the Birmingham Barons in 1957, he earned a late-season call-up to the Detroit Tigers and posted a 2.03 ERA in six appearances. After spending all of the next summer and most of the summer after that in the minors, he was back with the Tigers late in 1959 and had a 2.38 ERA in five outings. He continued to pitch in the minors through 1961 but due to a shoulder injury never made it back to the big leagues.

After baseball, Stump worked for General Motors for many years. He died in 2015 at age 83.
