James Joseph Sheasgreen

Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Sheasgreen umpired a couple of National League games in his native city of Montréal, QC in 1981 as an emergency fill-in. These games were on August 10 and August 11, between the Montreal Expos and Pittsburgh Pirates, just after the settlement of the 1981 strike. It was a period of major labor unrest in North America, as both the U.S. Air Traffic Controllers and the Canadian union of postal workers were also on strike at the time, causing major disruptions in air traffic. As a result, the only veteran umpire who could make it to Montreal for the two games was Dave Pallone, who worked home plate, while Sheasgreen, John Baird and Jean Leclerc manned the three bases. Sheasgreen was at third base for both games.

A graduate of McGill University with a master's degree in educational administration, Sheasgreen was an amateur umpire at the time. He moved to Alberta to become a school superintendent, then entered municipal politics. He served as city councilor in Fort Saskatchewan, AB from 2001 to 2004, when he was elected mayor. He was in office until 2010. After retiring from politics, he became a management consultant.
