Biographical Information[edit]
Jim Powell achieved a measure of fame by being a Richmond, VA born boy who played on Richmond's only major league team. He was on the Richmond team in the Eastern League which was added to the 1884 American Association in mid-season when another team dropped out. In the majors he played exclusively first base, a key defensive position of the time. He also had several seasons in the minors, often serving as player-manager. He died in Butte, MT, a place where he had served as manager of Butte teams.
Omitted were the following managerial stints: 1885 Norfolk / Eastern League, 1886-87 and part of 1888 Charleston / Southern League and 1889-90 Sioux City / Western Association.
