Biographical Information[edit]
Jim Moroney, who pitched three years in the majors, had a good ERA with the 1910 Phillies, posting a 2.14 ERA in 42 innings (although he did give up as many unearned runs as earned runs).
An article in the February 18, 1910 New York Times indicated that Moroney was purchased by Phillies president Horace Fogel from Baltimore, making him one of seven left-handers on the staff. The article further said that Fogel also announced he had purchased an elephant, for use both in a Phillies "hippodrome" and also as a work animal for the groundskeepers. The Times said that Moroney was acquired for money and an infielder; there was no indication that a trade was needed to acquire the elephant.
