Biographical Information[edit]

Jim McManus hit well in his cup of coffee with the Kansas City Athletics in 1960, slugging .538. Despite his obvious minor-league hitting skill, his major league stay was only slightly over one month.

McManus was originally a Detroit Tigers farmhand before being traded to the Athletics. He was a tall left-handed power hitter.

He was with the Montreal Royals in 1959 and the Shreveport Sports in 1960 (where he led the Southern Association in home runs).

McManus played for the original 1961 Hawaii Islanders. He played in 139 games, all but 10 at first base. He was a consistent hitter who always seemed to pick up a hit in every game. His final statistics that year were: 484 at-bats, 140 hits, 19 doubles, 2 triples and 21 homers. He drove in 81 runs and scored 60. He had 9 stolen bases and his final batting average was .275.

The next season, McManus got his release from the Athletics and then signed with the Taiyo Whales in Japan, where he played for 2 seasons (1962 and 1963).
