Biographical Information

"Jimmy Cockman, Newark's third baseman, puts up a claim that major league managers make a big mistake by not scouring Canadian territory when in quest of players... According to statistics furnished by Cockman, there are but eight Canucks playing professionally in the United States, including himself, all of whom have made good. From Guelph come Cockman, Greene, one of Jack Dunn's new pitching recruits, and Congalton, Cleveland's heavy-hitting outfielder. - Sporting Life, June 8, 1907

Jimmy Cockman had a long minor league career and came to the majors briefly in 1905, batting .105 in 13 games for the New York Highlanders. He also managed the Grand Island Collegians in 1912. Cockman was born, and died, in Guelph, ON. Cooney Snyder is the only other major leaguer born the same year (1873) in Canada. Although he moved around a lot, he was with Newark for four years during 1904-1907 and Lincoln from 1909-1911.
