He made his debut on July 27, 1927, and appeared in ten games, pitching 27 2/3 innings with a 5.86 ERA for an 0-2 record. Jim pitched his final game on September 22, 1928. Records do not show any activity for Beckman in the minor leagues. He died suddenly at the age of 69 on December 5, 1974, at his home in Montgomery, OH.

A biography appears in the book "The Local Boys", about Cincinnati, OH players. It says he grew up in Norwood, OH in the Cincinnati area, and was a top player with a championship amateur team called Comello's Clothiers. He came straight to the majors, never appearing in the minors. After baseball he was a car salesman.
