Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jhony Brito was a winner in his big league debut for the New York Yankees as the starter against the San Francisco Giants on April 2, 2023. He gave up just 2 hits and no runs in 5 innings in the 6-0 win. He had made the starting rotation because of a rash of injuries, putting projected starters Luis Severino, Frankie Montas and Carlos Rodon on the shelf. He ended up going 9-7, 4.28 in 15 games for the Yankees, including 13 starts, logging 90 1/3 innings. He struck out 72 opponents while walking 28, a very good ratio. His 9 wins were tied for second on the staff with Clarke Schmidt, trailing only ace Gerrit Cole.
Brito signed with the Yankees as an international amateur free agent from the Dominican Republic on November 9, 2015. On July 29, 2017, pitching for the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League, he was the first of four pitchers to combine on a 2-0 no-hitter against the Tri-City ValleyCats.
On December 6, 2023, he was one of five players sent by the Yankees to the San Diego Padres in return for OFs Juan Soto and Trent Grisham.
