Born in Harlem of Irish descent, Jess McMahon was orphaned at age five. At 16, he became a sports promoter. In 1902 he promoted semipro football on Sundays in spite of the blue laws and in 1905 formed the Olympic Athletic Club, including Rube Oldring. In 1911, he formed the New York Lincoln Giants, who would be a top Negro League team in the east for years. In 1914, he sold the team and formed the New York Lincoln Stars with brother Ed McMahon.
