Biographical Information

"Jerry Dorgan, the catcher, could throw down to second without straightening up, or moving in his tracks, and the ball raised no more than a rifle bullet. In a game with the champion Bostons in 1878, Jerry threw out four men in quick succession . . ." - from the book Sketch of Holyoke, about Jerry Dorgan on the Holyoke team in the late 1870's

The brother of Mike Dorgan, Jerry Dorgan was an above-average hitter who played four seasons in the majors. He played mostly right field and catcher.

Jerry was born in Meriden, CT, and eventually, in 1886, played for the Meriden team in the Eastern League. He played mostly for teams in the Northeast but also for teams farther away from Meriden such as Indianapolis and Detroit.

He died at age 35 after being found by police in a stable. He was brought to jail, where he was found dead the next morning, apparently of alcohol poisoning.
