Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Jeremiah Jackson was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2nd round of the 2018 amateur draft out of a private high school in Mobile, AL as the prototypical very athletic prospect who was still very raw in spite of a tremendous upside. He was first assigned to the AZL Angels after signing with L.A., and after hitting .317 in 21 games, was promoted to the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League for a further 22 games, in which he hit .198. He was back with Orem in 2019, hitting .266/.333/.606 with 23 homers and 60 RBIs in 65 games. He hit more homers than anyone on short-season ball that year. He gathered a lot of honors during and after the season, including being named the league's Player of the Month in August, a mid-season and post-season All-Star, an organizational All-Star, and being voted the circuit's Top Star, and being named to the Rookie-level All-Star team by Baseball America. He played both second base and shortstop that season, after being used exclusively at shortstop his first year.

Obviously, the COVID-19 pandemic came at a very bad time for him, shutting down the minor leagues for an entire season when he should have been playing full-season ball for the first time. When play resumed in 2021, he was with the Inland Empire 66ers of the Low-A West - the former California League - and hit .264 in 45 games, missing a good chunk of the year to an injury and making a rehabilitation assignment with the ACL Angels. He played in the Arizona Fall League after the season. In 2022, he was finally able to play a full season with the Rocket City Trash Pandas of the AA Southern League, although the jump in levels was a bit much for a player whose professional experience was still quite limited at that point. In 87 games, he hit .215/.308/.404, with 14 homers and 44 RBIs. Defensively, he was tried at other positions, with some games at third base and few in left field, in addition to his two usual positions. He returned to the same team at the start of 2023 and on April 8th, playing his first professional game in centerfield, he made a very costly error in one of the strangest games in minor league history. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Chattanooga Lookouts, starting pitcher Coleman Crow had pitched six hitless innings before turning the ball over to top prospect Ben Joyce to close out the 3-0 win. However, the hard-throwing Joyce struggled with his control, walking the bases loaded while getting the first two outs. He then walked another batter to force in a run, making it 3-1, but got Jacob Hurtubise to hit a fly ball to Jackson, which should have ended the game. However, maybe due to his lack of experience playing the position, Jeremiah missed the ball completely, allowing three runs to score. Things then went from bad to worse, as reliever Eric Torres plunked five batters, walked one and threw a wild pitch before finally ending the inning with a strikeout. Rocket City managed to score a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 7-5, a line never associated before with a no-hitter. In addition to his error, Jackson went 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts, stranding 5 baserunners, as he was off to an 0 for 12 start with 8 strikeouts.
