Biographical Information[edit]

"Stone is one of the last of the innocents, trying to make a name in this graceless age." - The Boston Globe

". . . one of the most unaffected people on the planet." - The Philadelphia Daily News

Jeff Stone was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies and scout Don Williams. He played eight years in the major leagues, most notably in 1984, when he hit .362 in 185 at-bats for the Phillies. His minor league career ran from 1980 to 1992. He hit over .300 several years in a row with the Portland Beavers and in 1981 set a short-lived minor league record with 123 stolen bases for the Class A Spartanburg Traders. That record would be shattered a year later by Vince Coleman, who would steal 145 bases in a minor league season.

Jeff's twin brother, Jerome Stone, was a minor league outfielder for the Phillies in 1984-1985. Jerome Stone later became a high school baseball coach in the area where the twins were from.

Growing up in poverty, Jeff worked during the day chopping cotton and played American Legion ball at night. He was a pitcher in high school but was such a fast runner that he was converted to a position player. Sportwriters sometimes wrote about him as if he were a country bumpkin, perhaps in part because he came from a small town.

After baseball, he worked as a police officer and in a steel mill.
