Biographical Information[edit]
Jeff Pearce played in the minor and independent leagues from 1990 to 1996. He started as an outfielder, but converted to pitching in 1994. He peaked at High-A.
Initially, he was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the 26th round of the 1989 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the San Diego Padres in the 6th round of the 1990 amateur draft, one pick after pitcher Gar Finnvold. He was also taken ahead of future star closer Troy Percival.
He played in the Padres system through 1993, showing limited offensive prowess, though he rattled off two-straight 24-steal seasons (1991 and 1992). He joined the independent Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks in 1994, where he began his transition to pitcher (10 relief appearances, 2.87 ERA, but 1.660 WHIP). The Seattle Mariners signed him as a pitcher for 1995, though his ERA was 7.03 ERA in 27 games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Despite his mark falling to 2.08 in 21 games for the Lancaster JetHawks in 1996, his WHIP was a meager 1.662, thus ending his professional career.
Overall, Pearce hit .266/.326/.397 with 30 home runs, 192 RBI and 70 steals in 457 games. On the mound, he was 2-1 with a 4.23 ERA in 58 relief appearances. In 61 2/3 innings, he allowed just 42 hits ... but also 66 walks ... for a 1.751 WHIP. He had 53 Ks.
