Biographical Information

Jeff Baker was the top USA star in the 1999 World Junior Championship, outperforming Joe Mauer and Carlos Quentin as the US won Gold. He hit .481 with a team-high 12 RBI and his 8 runs were second on the club behind Drew Meyer. In the Gold Medal game, he hit a 2-run single in the 8th to beat Taiwan, 10-9. Jeff set the Clemson University career record with 59 home runs and was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th round of the 2002 amateur draft, signed by scout Jay Matthews. He made his debut with the Asheville Tourists in 2003.

A journeyman backup in his major league career, Baker received some more playing time when the Miami Marlins' starting first baseman, Mike Morse, went on the disabled list in late May 2015, as he was asked to be the starter against left-handers. In two consecutive starts for Miami, on May 30th and June 3rd, he combined with slugger Giancarlo Stanton for back-to-back homers. The first of these occasions came against reliever Alex Torres of the New York Mets in the 9th inning of a 9-5 win, and the second off Jon Lester of the Chicago Cubs in the 5th inning of a 7-3 win. A month later, Jeff's career was over.

Jeff is actively involved in The Wounded Warrior Project, as his father is a retired US Army Colonel.
