Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Jay Woolf played in the St. Louis Cardinals system from 1995 to 2001 and in independent ball in 2002. Twice a Baseball America top-ten prospect in the Cardinals system (1997, #8; 1999, #7), he briefly peaked at Triple-A, but never ascended to the majors.
He was the Cardinals' second round draft pick in 1995, taken 44th overall. He was selected a couple picks after infielder Marlon Anderson and a few ahead of utilityman Craig Wilson. He was also taken ahead of star outfielder Carlos Beltran. He was signed by scout John DiPuglia.
He wasn't much of a power hitter, managing just 23 home runs in 1,661 at-bats, but had good speed, with three straight seasons (1996-1998) of 25+ steals (28, 26 and 28, respectively). He could draw walks and score runs—78 and 105 per 162 games, respectively—but didn't drive many runs in, with a career high of 27 in 1996 and an average of 41 per 162 games. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2000, hitting .243/.371/.311 in 32 games for the Memphis Redbirds; he hit .239/.340/.343 in 77 games overall. He returned briefly to Triple-A in 2001 (5 games) before wrapping up his career with the independent St. Paul Saints in 2002 (11 games).
Overall, he hit .258/.355/.379 with 23 home runs, 116 RBI, 113 steals and 302 runs scored in 464 games over 8 seasons.
