Biographical Information[edit]
Jay Hankins was in the majors with the Kansas City Athletics in 1961 and 1963.
He attended the University of Missouri from 1954 to 1957, and was there at the same time as Charlie James and Jerry Schoonmaker. He played in the Kansas City Athletics minor league organization from 1957 to 1963, usually hitting .300.
During his 86 games in the majors he played all three outfield positions, appearing in center field more often than the other two spots. In a statistical oddity, he hit four triples and four homers - but no doubles.
Hankins scouted for the Cleveland Indians in 1967-1968 and Kansas City Royals in 1969-1974. He also managed the Kingsport Royals in 1972. Hankins later was the Scouting Director of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1989 to 1992. He was a special assignment scout for the Phillies in 1994 and then a scout for the California Angels.
