Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Jason Robertson played in the minor leagues from 1989 to 1996. He briefly reached Triple-A in 1996, but never ascended to the majors.
He was taken by the New York Yankees in the 3rd round, 75th overall, in the 1989 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of first baseman John Olerud and in the same round as outfielder Tim Salmon. He was signed by scout Dick Groch. He had consistent speed, averaging nearly 21 stolen bases per season. After stealing just 4 bags his first year, he rattled off totals of 21, 32, 23, 35, 20, 19 and 12, respectively. He also had a 10-triple season in 1995, leading the Eastern League. He developed a small power stroke later on, clobbering 11 home runs in 1994 and 13 in 1996. He joined the Florida Marlins system in his final campaign, 1996, and reached Triple-A for the only time, hitting .040/.111/.160 in 25 at-bats for the Charlotte Knights. He had greater success (.272/.333/.447) with Double-A Portland Sea Dogs that year.
Overall, Robertson hit .249/.320/.368 with 53 home runs, 394 RBI and 166 stolen bases in 926 games over 8 seasons. He was strikeout prone, with 830 whiffs to 356 walks. He led the Eastern League in that category with 126 in 1993 and was second in the Carolina League in 1991 with 138, behind Jerrone Williams' 147.
His brother Bryant Robertson played in the New York Mets system in 1984 and 1985.
